When the state of North Carolina adopted a worksite wellness policy in February, Appalachian State University had already been in the game for about 20 years. The university's Health Promotion for Faculty and Staff program has provided activities and policies that support worker health since the mid-1980s.
Among components are screening for blood pressure, skin cancer, diabetes, vision, cholesterol, and breast cancer; a popular class that combines weight lifting and balance training; and an annual health and benefits fair. Workstation analysis and special programs on prenatal care and injury prevention are also offered. With a small staff, the program relies on volunteers to teach programs such as Tai Chi and aqua-aerobic exercise. A health promotion facility is located in the lower level of the varsity gym, and includes exercise rooms, free weights, and weight machines.
Says Director Sherri Wilson, "It's the only program of its kind in the University of North Carolina system that specifically targets faculty, staff, retirees, and spouses."
