Productivity Not Hurt by Cell Phone Bans, Says NSC

A new National Safety Council (NSC) member survey reveals that 99 percent of companies with policies prohibiting talking and texting while driving have experienced no loss in productivity.

Some have even seen productivity gains following implementation of the policies. Those that have not established a cell phone policy cite productivity as their top concern.

Nearly 60 percent of the more than 2,000 survey respondents said their organizations had some type of cell phone policy. Of those, more than half prohibit the use of hands-free or handheld phones. Although most policies are enforced through an honor system, 43 percent of companies conduct parking lot observations and about 40 percent use driver records and traffic citations. Almost 10 percent conduct in-vehicle monitoring. The survey canvassed businesses in manufacturing, transportation, and warehousing with fewer than 500 employees.
