OSHA regulates forklift safety and other powered industrial trucks due to the inherent risk in using these vehicles in a manufacturing facility. OSHA’s regulation 1910 Subpart N includes regulations for powered industrial trucks such as fork lifts, cranes, helicopters, slings, and derricks; and regulations covering the servicing of rim wheels for these vehicles.
Some of OSHA's forklift safety regulations apply to the forklift driver, but many also apply to everyone who works around forklifts. For the most part, these forklift safety requirements are basic commonsense precautions such prohibiting stunt driving or engaging in horseplay around the forklift. Other forklift safety precautions include: never allowing an unauthorized person to drive a forklift, keeping extremities inside the forklift, driving only in designated lanes, and slowing down on wet or slippery surfaces…just to name a few.
Refueling or recharging requirements for forklift trucks is also covered in OSHA’s forklift safety regulations, as well as specific procedures to follow when leaving a truck unattended. Forklift safety regulations also requires trucks to be inspected regularly and carefully maintained.
