OSHA requires employers to use PPE (personal protective equipment) to reduce employee exposure to hazards when engineering and administrative controls are not feasible or effective. OSHA’s primary PPE standards are in Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations, part 1910, subpart I. OSHA’s general PPE requirements mandate that employers conduct a hazard assessment, provide workers with appropriate PPE, and maintain PPE in a sanitary and reliable condition.
PPE includes equipment such as face shields, safety glasses, hard hats, and safety shoes. PPE also includes a variety of devices and garments such as goggles, coveralls, vests, gloves, earplugs, and respirators.
Training employees on how to use PPE, when to use PPE, and what kind of PPE is necessary, is not only critical in keeping employees safe from on the job hazards, but also a requirement of PPE regulations set forth by OSHA.
