We've all read the fear in the papers: without adequate pandemic planning Asian bird flu spreads around the globe and infects humans. Some health experts predict a wide-spread pandemic, which could have a massive economic impact.
In the employment setting, without proper pandemic planning the flu would cause employee illness and absenteeism to soar. At present, the avian flu hasn't appeared in the U.S. However, if the pandemic virus mutates, as some fear it will, it could spread quickly in the human population.
Although there is currently no need for alarm, it is always wise to put emergency plans in place early--and hope you'll never have to use them. A bird flu pandemic raises unusual and complex concerns about how to protect employee health and your organization's economic well being. For example, has your company considered how it could fulfill customer orders if 25 percent of the workforce was out sick? Do you have planning and preparation efforts in place to boost employee hygiene? Are your leave policies generous enough to encourage workers to self-quarantine rather than come to work when they might have a serious contagious illness such as the bird flu?
