Unless a
safety talk is well managed, well thought out, and well delivered, this brief safety meeting will not be effective in preventing accidents and injuries. Fortunately Safety.BLR.com has more than 200 expertly written safety talks, all ready for instant download or printing. Regardless if you choose the convenience of using Safety.BLR.com's pre-written talks, or choose to write your own from scratch, here are the basic steps that go into giving an effective safety talk.
Make Your Safety Talk Specific
A Safety talk that rambles or loses focus by discussing several different subjects or violations will not hold your employees’ attention. It's best to focus on one particular subject per safety talk. Choose a subject that involves as many people as possible and confine the presentation and suggestions to that single topic. It is more effective to teach people how to handle a single problem at a time, so they can eliminate that one hazard.
Further, it is a good idea to avoid such general statements as “Do better with your housekeeping.” A safety talk needs to tell employees exactly what to do. Say, for instance, “You need to make sure the aisles are clear of maintenance equipment” or “Clean up spills as soon as they happen.”
If you discuss housekeeping on a regular basis, pin down the subject for each safety talk to specifics such as the danger of discarding sharp items in wastebaskets, or the unsafe use of electrical cords and extensions.
Make Sure They Can Walk the Walk After the Talk
An effective safety talk involves much more than delivering information on a specific topic. It’s also important to make sure that everyone understands the rules or procedures that have been presented. A safety talk should always include time for attendees to ask questions.
