Federal regulations prohibit most workers under the age of 18 from operating forklifts, and those who are 18 or older must be certified to use the equipment, according to a bulletin issued by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Wage and Hour Division.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), workers under age 18 are prohibited from operating forklifts in nonagricultural operations. The bulletin also notes that OSHA’s Powered Industrial Truck standard requires that forklift operators who are 18 or older be trained and certified as competent to operate forklifts.

Improper use of forklifts and other powered industrial trucks puts operators and their co-workers at risk. Safety.BLR.com makes safety and training compliance easy.
