Exit Routes

National Summary

An exit route must be a permanent part of every workplace. It is a continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from any point within a workplace to a place of safety. The route consists of the exit access (portion of the exit route that leads to the exit), the exit (protected way of travel to the exit discharge), and the exit discharge (which leads directly outside or to a street, walkway, refuge area, public way, or open space with access to the outside).
