OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.157 requires employers to provide portable fire extinguishers and to mount, locate, and identify them so they are readily accessible. If employees are expected to use the extinguishers, the employer must conduct annual training on proper use. Employers are exempt from the training requirements if employees are not expected to use the extinguishers. It is important to remember that different types of fires must be fought with different types of extinguishers.
