Hours of Service (Motor Carriers)
National Summary

Hours of service (HOS) regulations are to ensure that drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) take adequate periods of rest, or periods off duty to be able to drive safely when on duty. Drivers of CMVs carrying property have different HOS requirements than drivers of passenger-carrying CMVs. An exception to the HOS regulations exists for adverse driving conditions that prevent a driver from safely completing the run within the maximum driving time permitted.
