Mohawk will improve fire safety at several U.S. sites

Under an agreement reached with OSHA, Mohawk Industries, Inc. will increase fire protection at its four carpet-pad facilities. The settlement resolves citations issued by OSHA in 2011 for violations at a manufacturing site in Johnstown, Ohio. Other affected locations are Commerce and Tifton, Georgia, and Torrington, Connecticut.

OSHA cited Mohawk with serious violations involving dust, unguarded floors, and electrical hazards. The agreement amends the citation and requires the business to abate alleged fire hazards at the Johnstown site.

Mohawk will hire and implement the recommendations of a professional fire protection engineer to assess potential fire and /or explosion hazards. Mohawk will also develop procedures for periodic cleanup and removal of polymer foam dust from surfaces where it could accumulate, provide training for affected employees, conduct monthly inspections of fire-suppression systems, and provide training on emergency evacuation.
