Investigators evaluated concerns about indoor lighting, indoor environmental quality, and job stress. They concluded that air was not evenly distributed to all areas of the facility. And they determined that job stress and employee health concerns were moderately high.

NIOSH recommended that the employer try different lighting patterns and ask employees for input. Also, employees should be advised to:

  • Seek counseling for symptoms of anxiety, anger, depression, or other health issues.
  • Debrief with a supervisor or coworker immediately after a call with an unfriendly customer.
  • Immediately report suspicious behavior or expressions of violence to a supervisor.

Employees, employee representatives, or employers can ask NIOSH to help learn if health hazards are present at their place of work. NIOSH may provide assistance and information by phone and in writing, or may visit the workplace to assess exposure and employee health. The evaluation is performed at no cost to the requestor.
