Governor signs measures to improve health care, safety

Governor Pat Quinn has signed laws intended to help working families acquire insurance and stay healthy. The measures all passed unanimously in the General Assembly.

One of the proposals (Senate Bill 2885) will allow more small businesses to join together to form a Healthcare Purchasing Group. It will benefit companies unable to provide coverage individually by letting them pool resources with other employers. It takes effect January 1.

House Bill 4968 recognizes the health benefits of breastfeeding for newborns. It requires Illinois hospitals to develop policies that promote the value of breast milk. Hospitals will also provide new mothers with information about infant nutrition and the value of breastfeeding.
