Report details prevalence of mental illness in U.S. adults

One in five American adults 18 or older—more than 45 million people— had mental illness in the past year. The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) says the rate of mental illness was more than twice as high among those 18 to 25 than for those 50 and older. Adult women were more likely than men to have the condition, and adults with substance dependence or abuse had rates far higher than those who did not take drugs.
