Study links job insecurity with signs of poor health

Workers who perceive that their jobs are not secure are more likely to rate themselves in poor health and have increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. Sarah A. Burgard and collegues at the University of Michian analyzed data from 440 work-age adults in southeast Michigan. The findings were reported in the September issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

They found that nearly 18 percent of workers felt it was at least fairly likely that they would lose their job or be laid off within the next year. Those with job insecurity rated their health lower than those who saw their jobs as more secure and were three times more likely to rate their health as “fair to poor.”

Based on the results, Burgard and her collegues call for interventions targeting the large number of people who may be suffering the mental and physical effects of job worries. They add that perceptions of job insecurity may persist for some time in view of the slow economic recovery.
