UAB gets with top award from Heart Association

The American Heart Association (AHA) has recognized the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) with its Worksite Innovation and gold-level Fit Friendly Company awards for 2012. The UAB has won both honors in the past.

The AHA specifically pointed to the Green Screens blood-pressure screening program and the Summer 5 in 5 Challenge, which focused on nutrition, physical activity, and weekly weigh-ins.

Over a 5-year period, participants worked to lose 5 pounds, lower blood pressure by 5 points, and engage in 5 designated activities, such as running, yoga, or visiting a local farm stand.

“All of these programs are aimed at giving our faculty and staff opportunities to engage in healthy eating, planning, and exercise activity,” says UAB Wellness Coordinator Lauren Whitt. “We know it can be overwhelming trying to find a place to start. We’re here to help and encourage.”
