Tyson settles for millions in worker fatality case

Tyson Foods, Inc., and its affiliates have settled with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the EPA in a case regarding a fatal release of anhydrous ammonia. The DOJ says the settlement will protect workers at Tyson facilities in Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska.

Under the decree, Tyson will pay a $3.95 million penalty and will purchase emergency response equipment for first responders. The agreement also requires comprehensive third-party audits and correction of violations.

Anhydrous ammonia is a gas used in refrigeration. It is considered an extremely hazardous substance. Exposure to vapors can cause temporary blindness and eye damage, as well as irritation of the skin, mouth, throat, and respiratory tract. Prolonged exposure can result in serious lung damage and death.
