Commitment is engine for Union Pacific safety streak

Union Pacific Railroad (UPR) says its 2012 safety performance was the best in the company’s 150-year history. Employees achieved a 1.01 reportable rate, surpassing a slightly higher rate in 2011. From 2002 to 2012, the rate improved by more than 58 percent, according to the railroad.

UPR’s North Platte service unit helped make 2012 a record safe year. The division’s approximately 3,000 employees achieved a 12 percent improvement over the previous year.

Union Pacific uses innovative technology to improve safety. For example, many employees receive comprehensive training through computer software that teaches them how to maneuver locomotives in rail yards, operate switches, and sort railcars onto tracks. The video simulation technology lets workers practice what they have learned in the classroom before working outside.

Concern for coworkers and strong safety leadership have also contributed to the low injury rates.
