Owens Corning wins top safety honor as it continues to pursue zero injuries

Owens Corning is the 2014 recipient of the National Safety Council’s (NSC) Green Cross for Safety medal. Read more about the best practices and strong policies that are contributing to its drop in injuries.

The prestigious Green Cross award is presented annually to an organization with outstanding safety performance and a commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities where employees work and live.

In announcing the award, the NSC pointed to Owens Corning’s strong safety leadership at all levels. The Fortune 500 Company, which manufactures building materials and other products, has adopted a global safety stand based on four principles:

  • Our safety commitment is unconditional.
  • All accidents are preventable.
  • Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
  • Working safely is a condition of employment.

Owens Corning brings those principles to life through best practices, including the following:

  • A ban on employee use of cell phones for company business while driving;
  • An expectation that contractors will have the same unconditional approach to safety as Owens Corning teams;
  • A focus on controlling exposures related to lockout/tagout, machine guarding, fall protection, powered industrial vehicles, confined space, and automobile safety; and
  • Certification of safety trainers and specialists through a formal training program.

At Owens Corning, safety success is closely aligned with overall business performance. Noted Chairman and CEO Mike Thaman, “Safety is a true indicator of not only manufacturing excellence, but also overall operating performance. Our success in keeping employees safe has set the bar for how we perform in the market and with our suppliers, customers, and each other.”
