9 employers honored for excellence in job safety

The Wyoming OSHA program in partnership with the office of Governor Matt Mead announced nine winners of this year’s Governor’s Safety Awards. They are: Buckskin Mine; Degerstrom Converters; Rail Link; L&H Industrial; Suncor Energy USA Pipeline Company; Chevron USA; American Equipment, Inc.; Cheyenne Healthcare Center; and G.M. Stewart Corporation.

“These awards signal the investment of the employers in building a legacy of safety embraced by all involved,” noted Mead. “Everyone in the workplace, regardless of title or position, has a responsibility for job safety.”

Rail Link, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming, Inc., was honored for the second year. Senior Vice President Andrew Chunko said, “Safety is the number-one priority for us and for our customers, and it’s wonderful to have the state of Wyoming recognize that commitment. We are now working hard to win the award 3 years in a row.”

The awards program is part of a multipronged approach to reinforce job safety. The state government stepped up efforts since it was revealed that workplace deaths were 10 times higher than the national average. Wyoming has hired eight new safety staffers, and the legislature has established a safety grant program.
