Can a bad boss be bad for your health?

Dr. Robert Hogan told participants at an American Psychological Association (APA) conference that about half of all managers are incompetent and cause unnecessary stress for employees.

Hogan spoke on The Modern Manager: Money Maker or Mental Health Menace. He explained, “Bad managers create enormous heath costs and are a major source of misery for many people.”

Reasons include “dysfunctional interpersonal tendencies” that are especially apparent when these people deal with subordinates. Hogan says bad managers (ranging from incompetent to tyrannical) also lose money for their companies. He cites research showing that poorly run companies earn less profit than those with better managers.

According to Hogan, good leadership must be nurtured, and bad leaders must be confronted about their flaws. He is president of Hogan Assessment Systems, a distributor of psychological assessments.
