New NTSB policy should enhance aviation safety

The FAA, airlines, and unions have agreed to increase the amount of information they disclose to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The decision should help the agency spot factors that can lead to airline fatalities, according to the law firm Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman.

The parties have agreed to share more data with the NTSB in an effort to distinguish unique causes of accidents from systemic problems. The firm says that previous disclosures under NTSB’s Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) Institute have led to important safety improvements.

Under the ASIAS, maintenance employees and flight crews from 42 airlines submit information to the NTSB. Although the agency is known for its investigations of airline and other transportation accidents, the NTSB is also on the front lines of accident prevention.
