Supporters urge lawmakers to restore NIOSH funding

A coalition of more than 200 organizations has written letters to congressional leaders, urging them to restore funding for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The current fiscal year (FY) 2014 budget proposal would cut NIOSH funding by more than $50 million below FY 2012 levels. And the proposal would eliminate several NIOSH programs, including the institute’s Education and Research Centers.

The coalition, known as Friends of NIOSH, is requesting that funding for the institute be restored at least to 2012 levels. Friends of NIOSH is a coalition of industry, labor, education, and scientific organizations dedicated to research, training, and prevention of occupational injuries and illnesses.

The letters were addressed to ranking members of the Senate and House Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. The coalition notes the importance of safety and health research in order to assess occupational risks and the steps that can be taken to reduce them. Research helps develop technologies to protect workers in potentially hazardous environments. And, training and education are essential to prepare the next generation of occupational health professionals.

Friends of NIOSH includes the American Society of Safety Engineers, the National Safety Council, many universities, farm safety groups, safety and health professional organizations, private businesses, and others.
