Young worker safety leadership campaign launched

At a young leadership and skills conference, 4,000 students, educators, and administrators pledged to improve workplace safety. They kicked off a campaign to educate a million students about on-the-job safety by December 31, 2015.

According to CareerSafe® Online, sponsor of the program, one young worker is injured every 2 minutes in the workplace, every 7 minutes a young worker is hospitalized because of a workplace injury, and one young worker is killed every 5 days. According to federal OSHA, a “young worker” is 14-24 years old.

At the conference the benefits of implementing safety education at the secondary and postsecondary levels were demonstrated. Video testimonials included personal accounts of injury, employability, and other benefits.
