DOT kicks off initiative to oversee public transit safety

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has kicked off efforts to boost safety oversight standards on heavy rail, light rail, buses, ferries, and streetcars. The initiative is the result of a new law known as the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act, known as MAP-21.

“Under MAP-21, we’re ushering in a new era for transit safety,” said LaHood. “Working with the committee advisors and state leaders, we’ll help strengthen state safety oversight agencies to carry out this vitally important mission.” The program will be administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration.

Establishment of an advisory committee will be followed by development of basic safety standards for public transportation. One idea under consideration is a public transportation safety certification-training program that applies to federal and state employees.
