DOT to bus companies: Follow tire safety rules

Several recent incidents involving tire blowouts on passenger buses have prompted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to take a closer look at the cause of these accidents. In partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the FMCSA has determined that double-deck buses may overload tires outside the suggested weight limit. In some instances the buses may exceed the tire weight limit when loaded with passengers and luggage.

An FMCSA advisory bulletin states that safe motorcoach operators should have policies and procedures in place to monitor vehicle loading and take action to remain within the limits. Examples are reducing passenger/cargo loads, distributing passengers throughout the bus, or increasing tire pressure.

Meanwhile, the FMCSA and NHTSA continue to investigate the causes of recent bus tire failures. Unsafe behavior or conditions can be reported by calling the federal Department of Transportation (DOT) toll free at 888-368-7238.
