If confirmed, Foxx will replace outgoing Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. Among other initiatives, LaHood led a campaign against distracted driving, which continues to be an important safety issue for many employers.

In nominating Foxx, Obama cited several transportation-related projects the Charlotte mayor had been involved with as evidence of his ability to be an effective leader of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The DOT is responsible for regulating motor carriers, transportation of hazardous materials, and more. Its divisions include the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), the Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHMS), the Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS), and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The DOT also coordinates its efforts with other federal agencies, including OSHA and the EPA, to ensure safety for workers and the public.
