Highway deaths at lowest level in 6 decades

If you’ve been focusing on employee driving safety your efforts may be paying off. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that highway deaths fell to 32,367 in 2011, marking the lowest level since 1949 and a nearly 2 percent decrease from the previous year.

“The latest numbers show how the tireless work of our safety agencies and partners, coupled with significant advances in technology and continued public education, can really make a difference on our roadways,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. He hopes to build on that progress by tackling issues like seatbelt use, driver distraction, and impaired driving.

The NHTSA found that in 2011:

  • Fatalities increased 20 percent among occupants of large trucks.
  • Deaths in crashes involving drunk drivers dropped by 2.5 percent.
  • The number of people killed in distracted-affected crashes rose to 3,331 compared to 3,267 in 2010. The NHTSA thinks the increase may be attributed in part to increased awareness and reporting.
