Hazards that can cause vehicle accidents include:

  • Roadway conditions (e.g., roadway geometry, wet/slick road surfaces)
  • Atmospheric conditions (e.g., rain, snow, glare)
  • Vehicle factors (e.g, tires, brakes)
  • Driver variables (e.g., distraction, fatigue, intoxication)

Transportation incidents are consistently the top cause of work-related fatalities; in 2013, they were responsible for 40 percent of work-related deaths. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers experienced the highest number of vehicle-related fatalities, followed by workers in construction and extraction occupations; protective service occupations; and installation, maintenance, and repair occupations.

OSHA does not have a specific standard addressing vehicle-related hazards, but the agency can cite employers who fail to protect workers from recognized hazards under the General Duty Clause. The Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates commercial motor carriers and enforces safety standards for commercial motor vehicles and their drivers.
