Corrosives and Battery Safety
National Summary

This topic covers corrosives, which are substances that destroy other materials (e.g., clothing, skin, metal) on contact. Corrosives can be solid, liquid, or gas, and include such substances as hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, fluorine, and chlorine. Battery safety is also covered here.

Employers whose workers are exposed to corrosives must comply with OSHA’s Hazard Communication standard. Both OSHA and the DOT require corrosives to be labeled accordingly.
