National Summary

This topic covers OSHA’s regulations for spray finishing, defined as any method where “organic or inorganic chemicals are utilized in dispersed form for deposit on surfaces to be coated, treated, or cleaned.” Examples of covered activities include application of flammable liquids in a spray booth or area, electrostatic coating operations, and automobile body lining operations.

OSHA has a specific standard for spray finishing using flammable and combustible materials, found in 29 CFR 1910.107. Other applicable standards for painting and spraying include those for ventilation (29 CFR 1910.94), eye and face protection (29 CFR 1910.133), and respiratory protection (29 CFR 1910.134).
