This topic covers the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Hours of Service (HOS) regulations for commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).
The HOS regulations are intended to ensure that drivers of CMVs take adequate periods of rest or periods off duty in order to drive safely when on duty. Drivers of CMVs carrying property have different HOS requirements than drivers of passenger-carrying CMVs. An exception to the HOS regulations exists for adverse driving conditions that prevent a driver from safely completing the run within the maximum driving time permitted.
