Toxic and Hazardous Substances in construction are regulated under 29 CFR 1926.55 (gases, vapors, fumes, dusts, and mists) and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart Z (toxic and hazardous substances). With the exception of stricter or more detailed construction requirements for asbestos, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium, the requirements of 1926 Subpart Z are an adoption of the general industry regulations under 1910 Subpart Z. The construction permissible exposure limits (PELs) for hazardous substances (29 CFR 1926.55, Appendix A) generally mirror the general industry PELs, except the construction PELs for certain hazardous dusts are stricter than the general industry PELs.
